SCIENTIFIC EDITING
I am a marine biogeochemist and geologist, not an English teacher or climate researcher, although I do have very strong language and writing skills. If you want, you can read more about my professional background elsewhere on this web site.
Although it is not exactly the only thing I do, I have carried out quite a bit of scientific editing over the years. I used to offer grant proposal assistance as well. Clients who rely on me for their scientific editing are mainly American and Dutch scientists, but also include Chinese PhD students and an occasional French or German scientist.
Typical clients come in three shapes. It is usually a professor who either saves time by letting me streamline his or her students' manuscripts, is about to submit an article to Science or Nature, or has gotten the first reviews back and is told to seek the assistance of a scientific editor. Sometimes, PhD students contact me one after another because they refer each other to me after having heard of my services.
As owner of SmarterScience, I handle most of the scientific editing, but I occasionally also make use of a proofreader. It depends on the nature of the manuscript, the workload on my plate, and my schedule.
Final editing is always done by me in person and I treat all manuscripts with utmost confidentiality, and so do any proofreaders I may use.
By letting me work on your journal manuscript, you not only can save yourself a lot of time. You also increase the paper's chance of being accepted rapidly. Some journals openly state that scientific editing speeds up the acceptance process.
Scientific editing
means that I review and edit your manuscript for you and comment on it. Where necessary, I will rewrite parts.
Sometimes, the entire manuscipt gets rewritten.
I will also check the references, if possible, and give
you scientific input. (Yes, I did once catch a conclusion that did not add up and I do spot the occasional error.)
If the manuscript is going to be submitted to a scientific journal, I will check the instructions to authors
(if available).
As mentioned before, I handle manuscripts with the utmost confidentiality.
Scientific journals I have edited manuscripts for:
