Spans the range from science and technology to writing and creativity
Science, that's SmarterScience's business
Scientific editing of journal papers, theses and other scientific manuscripts is one of the services offered by SmarterScience.
LaTeX is welcome and conversion into LaTeX is possible as well. You send me all the files for the manuscript,
and I'll come up with
a fee (usually fixed) and an estimated turnaround period, depending on your requirements.
SmarterScience's editing clients are mainly Americans and
Dutch people, but we've also seen a few Chinese Ph.D. students, and a French scientist, among others. Below, you find more
details as well as a list of journals I've edited manuscripts for. I do occasionally also make use of a proofreader,
depending on the nature of the manuscript, the load on my plate, and my schedule.
Final editing is always handled by me in person.
Below, you find more information, a portfolio and some client feedback.
Scientific editing
Are you about to submit a manuscript to your favorite scientific journal? You will want
your colleague in the next room to take a look at it first and, oh, maybe that guy in physics too.
Or do you have a student who is writing his or her first manuscript? You can save yourself a lot of time
(hence, money) if you send me the manuscript to streamline it, so you don't have to!
We all need other people who can read our scientific manuscripts and help us smooth them.
Our minds fill in the gaps in the text when we read our own manuscripts.
We wrote them, after all. We know what we were trying to say. That is one of
the reasons why you always let others read your manuscripts before you submit them to one of the journals.
But
what do you do when two of those colleagues are away at a conference and a third one is ill?
Send it to SmarterScience!
By letting me (and my associates) work on your manuscript, you can save yourself some time and
increase the paper's chance of being accepted rapidly. Some journals openly state that scientific editing speeds
up the acceptance process.
Editing of scientific journal papers and other manuscripts
is a natural extension of my writing activities.
Scientific editing
means that SmarterScience reviews and edits your manuscript
for you and comments on it. Where necessary, SmarterScience will rewrite parts.
Sometimes, the entire manuscipt gets rewritten.
I will also check the references, if possible, and give
you my scientific input. (Yes, I have on occasion caught conclusions that did not add up.)
If the manuscript will be submitted to a scientific journal, I will check the instructions to authors
(if available).
My scientific editing services are not limited to research papers. Book chapters, manuals, theses,
research proposals and conference proceedings are welcome too. And yes, I can handle manuscripts in
LaTeX, and large files with lots of high-res graphics are welcome as well.
It goes without saying that I handle manuscripts with the utmost confidentiality. Even after they've been
published, I leave it up to the article's author and so far, the only paper I've
actually mentioned as soon as it was published was a Nature article that was so good I just knew was going to be
accepted as soon as I saw the manuscript.
Below are links to a few publications that actually list me in the acknowledgements:
"... during the preparation of the manuscript; and to Angelina Souren
(SmarterScience) and two anonymous editors who helped us revise this
manuscript."
(Science of The Total Environment, Volume 362, Issues 1-3, 1 June 2006, Pages 242-258)
"A big thank you goes to Angelina Souren and Tony John for the many proof-readings they have performed."
(Ph.D. thesis at Delft University of Technology, 2009)
"We thank the members of the Ice & Climate group of the IMAU and Angelina Souren
for their helpful comments."
(Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research 36(4):575-583. 2004)
Grant and research proposals, book chapters and so on:
Several chapters of a book on climate research;
Ph.D. thesis in agronomy;
Propsals in medical physics, climate research and civil engineering for clients in The Netherlands;
Grant proposals (geochemistry, biology) for clients in the United States;
Numerous chapters of various Ph.D. theses in civil engineering and climate research.
