One of the things I do: assistance with graduate teaching
SmarterScience can assist you with your teaching load.
You may suddenly be asked to teach a class in petrology,
fluid inclusions or marine mycology, while it is not what you do on a daily basis. I can help you and
save you some
time by, for example, reviewing the recent literature for you. I have also written articles that are
now used in classes as part of the teaching material.
Below are some examples of specific teaching projects SmarterScience has carried out.
- Tidal Rivers
In 2000, the University of Twente
in The Netherlands asked me to carry out a study and incorporate the results
into the
translation (also by SmarterScience) of an existing teaching text for M.Sc. students. The text covered the mathematics
and physics of "tidal rivers".
This client also needed a new lab exercise involving modeling
with SOBEK: 1-D (Delft, The Netherlands).
Together with René Buijsrogge, I designed, taught and graded this lab
(about five meetings with students). The
lab exercise was further fine-tuned after
this first run and is still being used today.
One of the students told me: "I really like this class, particularly because
the lab addresses the topics covered in the lectures very well." Some of the students stayed in
touch with me for a while after that class.
These course materials are still being used, which is why I maintain a
web page with tidal-river links.

- Protecting Sandy Coasts
In
2000, the University of Twente in The Netherlands asked me to step in when one of its professors
suddenly resigned and
relocated to another country.
The client needed me to arrange a field trip to the German barrier
island of Norderney, with teaching materials and grading, and at fairly short notice. Main topic was
the protection of
this island against wave action.
SmarterScience provided the materials, booked bus, rental car, and hotel room in nearby Hengelo - and then
found out the hard way that finding a
university campus in the early morning can be a real
challenge when this campus is temporarily not sign-posted...
The web pages were launched as
follow-up to this trip (which still takes place from time to time).
