About this blog and its author

Angelina, July 2010

The author of this blog, that’s me, Angelina Souren. I am a self-employed earth and life science specialist with a previous background in tourism.

I have served as a member of the board and many committees of one of Holland’s largest organizations of women in science (NIMF) and on the board of the Environmental Chemistry Section of the Royal Netherlands Chemical Society (KNCV).

For more than ten years, I was one of the associate editors of the newsletter of the U.S.-based Geochemical Society.

Below is more information about me, but first, let me point you toward some of the more popular posts on this blog:

I’ve always been interested and involved in bridging the gap between science and society. Apart from that, I like to be at the cutting edge of developments and love fast-paced minds and matching conversations. I have tremendous admiration for those who are highly driven and excel at what they do and I’m a total sucker for razor-sharp all-round minds. On the other hand, I am not overly interested in mere appearances and prefer integrity and responsibility.

I have lived and worked in various countries. After a career in tourism and languages, I initially trained as a hard-rock geologist, switched fields toward the end of my Master’s and became a marine biogeochemist. I’ve been a feminist all my life, meaning that I do not subscribe to the view that women are an inferior subspecies of the human race.

In 1997, I established SmarterScience as Armadillo Research Services, in Amsterdam. At the end of 2004, SmarterScience and I moved to the United Kingdom.

samplingSmarterScience works for all sorts of parties who deal with scientific knowledge in one way or another.

Think of studies carried out for research organizations or university professors (for example to help you prepare a review article), reader material prepared for graduate teaching, contributions to books provided to publishers, scientific editing for university scientists, writing of snappy articles for engineering companies or an honest and unbiased opinion on the information you, a citizen or a group of citizens, have about a polluted location you are concerned about.

I originally modeled SmarterScience on the growing variety of tasks university scientists face every day in contrast with the only two or three things scientists had on their plate decades ago. A smarter way to do science! A pair of helping hands, or more accurately, an extra set of brains.
