I managed to get my face and a few words into a Canadian book for kids (ninth grade, if I remember correctly). I must say, the book looks great!
It is called “The 10 Most Incredible Landforms” and the Mariana Trench is on the list at #4. The publisher is Rubicon Publishing in Ontario. ISBN 978-1-55448-329-7.
As I have had quite a bit of information on the web about the Mariana Trench for years, the writer contacted me at the time and asked for a “sound bite” and a quick look at his draft.
I started liking the Mariana Trench when I heard that fungi had been found on the bottom. In 1998, I convened an AGU session on fungi and yeasts in the marine environment, and there I heard that Kaiko had just found a shrimp-like organism, deep in the Trench.
I whipped up a few pages on the Mariana Trench at some point and when I was about to delete them, I discovered that there were many links to them. They have drawn quite a few visitors over the years. At some point, however, I noticed that the search engines started looking at the business site as “a site about the Mariana Trench”.
That is when I started a separate site with general information about earth science topics like the Mariana Trench and the Black Sea. The idea was to help direct the right people to the right pages. I imagine it can be annoying when you do a search on a site and find too many pages that are not of interest to you.
Anyway, it’s cool, this book! It helps ensure there will be money to pay wages for educators at universities. If you’d like to order it for your school, see this Scholastic Canada page.
