Le Café Scientifique

I did post about this topic before and I am going to remind you of it again: Le Café Scientifique!

Portsmouth Café Scientifique, Febr 23, 2010

Cafés Scientifiques take place in many countries all over the globe.

If you’re familiar with Portsmouth, you may have a strong hunch about the venue at which the Portsmouth Cafés take place. ;-)

I remember one particular session* of the Portsmouth Café Scientifique at the start of 2009 that I had wanted to attend and was unable to. I also remember suggesting to someone in Amsterdam that it might be a good idea to organize more of such activities in the Netherlands as well.

The next session of the Portsmouth Café is about gender-bending chemicals.

The video mentioned in my previous post talks about these phenomena as well (certain chemicals resulting in the development of female characteristics in male organisms and in decreasing percentages of males in offspring).

*That particular session was one on synesthesia, of which I had never heard before. Basically, it’s about the following. Many of us blindly assume that our senses are separated. In reality, they often are not and for some people, this is the case to a very advanced degree.

Apparently, most of us have it in some way, but it had never occurred to me and hence, I had never examined it. After learning about this, I became aware of the fact that I have memories of a nice cornflower blue color in a particular scene in the past that in reality did not have this color in it at all, and even was pretty devoid of color. Fascinating!

  1. Question from the audience on February 23:

Has any of your research made you change your behavior? Things that you eat or use?
