Sunday, August 8th, 2010Opportunity!
Saturday, July 3rd, 2010I just found five discount vouchers printed in January this year, but I obviously haven’t handed them out yet. They were valid for six months and expire at the end of this month.

They are printed on special watermarked and textured paper so it would be a shame to let them go to waste. Who wants to grab one? They’ll give you a 15% discount on your project.
Frans van Hoeflaken in Trouw
Thursday, April 1st, 2010
Geologist Frans van Hoeflaken – shown here in Mongolia with his son on his back – whom I have known since the mid-1980s is currently doing a two-year stint in Papua New Guinea. Trouw, a major Dutch newspaper, dedicated an article to it on March 14.
Latex
Friday, February 26th, 2010Latex… Some people think of trees and sap when they hear the word, others of condoms or lab gloves – though hopefully not in relation to allergies – and yet others of elastomer technology and membrane materials or rubber boots. A few of you may conjure up images of whips, high heels and other accessories, and the Dutch will think of wall paint.

Well, there are already plenty of other web sites that go there. This is not one of them. Sorry to disappoint you if that was what you were looking for.
But did you know that there are also people who think of mathematical equations when they SEE the word latex, but not when they HEAR it?
(Equations? You gotta be kidding me, right?)
Flood defenses
Tuesday, February 16th, 2010Today, an exhibition about flood defenses in the UK was officially opened. You can find the RIBA Flood Exhibition – Facing up to rising sea levels – at Portsmouth Cathedral, High Street in Old Portsmouth. It will last two weeks (15 – 27).
See also this PDF file with three flooding scenarios – retreat, defend, attack – for two British towns, namely Hull and Portsmouth, on the web site of the Institute of Civil Engineers.
With lots of thanks for giving me the info to Maricar Jagger, PR Officer for University of Portsmouth!

“Anti-plastic bag tax urged” in UK
Monday, February 8th, 2010According to an item in today’s Metro, 45% of Britain’s residents have bought reusable shopping bags. Only 12% use them regularly, says the article. The estimate is that 10 billion disposable bags per year are used, instead of reusable bags.
Ireland has managed to accomplish a 90% cut in plastic-bag use, and green groups in Britain are now urging to implement a bag tax here as well.

Friday, February 5th, 2010Are you HIP?
Tuesday, January 19th, 2010Are you a foreign professional based in Hampshire, UK? American, Canadian, Spanish, Polish, Dutch or maybe German? Are you HIP, in other words, a Hampshire International Professional? Get in touch with me, please.
I would like to set up a network of HIP people, to be able to network and share a laugh and a tear from time to time.
And a joke or two, a few beers, a pizza, that well-deserved but overdue pat on the back, a pastry or a movie, Thanksgiving dinners, professional tips and anything else that might come up in a foreign professional’s life that you want to share or discuss with someone who understands where you are coming from.
So, if you are truly HIP, please drop me a note. Thanks!
PS
The idea is to start with a weekly or monthly meet for coffee or lunch. Optional! I’ll be there and whether you show up or not is up to you.
