Consultancy is one of the scientific services I provide through SmarterScience. Below are some examples.

    studies
  • For a commercial party in Florida, SmarterScience conducted a quick literature study of the nitrogen balance and uremia in humans, a quick study of blood urea nitrogen strips, and a more extensive study to do with the liver in humans (literature).
  • For a professor at an American university, SmarterScience carried out a study in the area of fisheries science (literature).
  • A mining company asked SmarterScience to carry out an inventory of the literature in relation to a possible contamination problem.
  • As associate editor for The Geochemical News, I carried out a scientific literature study regarding cyanide in the environment and related analysis methods (literature) and wrote a review article.
  • For a geologist in Azerbaijan, and involving a geologist in Turkey, SmarterScience investigated the possibility of setting up - and writing a grant proposal for - a large regional study investigating certain fault patterns.

For the same client, and in conjunction with Hoeflaken Geoconsulting, SmarterScience then carried out a preliminary investigation regarding a proposal for a geological field study to be financed by oil companies. This study was to be carried out in the field by Hoeflaken Geoconsulting and the client, and to be coordinated by SmarterScience.

  • happy client of a scientific study A large environmental laboratory that had developed a new chemical analysis method asked me whether I could provide a report that would place the new method in its proper framework.
  • The biology department of an American university requested SmarterScience to put together the body of an NSF proposal.
  • An American non-profit organization asked SmarterScience to carry out a very quick literature study regarding the feeding of wild birds.
  • In 1998, I convened a conference session on marine mycology.

Non-scientists from time to time ask whether SmarterScience also analyzes soil, rock or water samples, for instance with regard to rhodium content (an actual request that once came in from Iran) or pollutants.

Yes, I can let someone take samples if necessary and yes, I can have samples analyzed at a commercial or university laboratory. No problem.

I can also provide you with a detailed report explaining the analysis results and probably anything else you may need.

My clients rarely require lab analyses, though, because many have their own labs. The ones who do not have labs - for example publishers - have no need for chemical or other lab analyses.

Somewhat similar considerations hold for various types of modeling. It is rarely something my clients would want to outsource.

SmarterScience also offers other scientific services.
