Spans the range from science and technology to writing and creativity
Below you will find some data and background for SmarterScience, and information on some of its partners.
Background
SmarterScience was established and formally registered by me, Angelina Souren,
in the Netherlands in 1997, initially under a different name.
At the end of 2004, the business and its owner
relocated to the southeast coast of the United Kingdom. From Portsmouth, it is just a short trip to the continent,
by plane, car or train.
This website uses "I" and "we". That's because this is my business, but I do run it with the
aid of business partners and experts I subcontract to. You can find more information about me on
this page and this page.
Phone number
+44 (0)23 9234 2909 is SmarterScience's phone number.
Please, do leave your number and ask to be called back if nobody answers the telephone in person.
That's why voice mail was invented, after all. Alternatively,
send
an e-mail,
with a few times at which you are available to receive a phone call.
Skype
Yes, SmarterScience has a Skype account.
Send an e-mail
if you want to
make an appointment for a Skype call if the Skype account is offline. The Skype name is SmarterScience.
VAT registration number
GB 860 7699 81
The VAT number is also printed on the invoices.
Procedure
SmarterScience almost always uses contracts. They help clarify details and identify and solve possible
misunderstandings before the start of the project.
Payment
SmarterScience's invoices generally contain all the banking info you will need to carry out payment.
Call +44 (0)23 9234 2909 or send an
e-mail
if you need further information.
SmarterScience reserves the right to impose interest under Late Payment legislation (base rate plus 8%,
after 30 days after the invoice date).
PayPal
After consultation with me, clients may be able to use PayPal for relatively small amounts. Please, do
contact me first.
Postal address
SmarterScience is a highly virtual business and does not have a fancy office building.
It works for clients from all over the world, from individual business,
university and home offices all over the world, as well as on-site.
Please do
contact us first,
if you have urgent or important postal mail. It may be needed on location or we may decide to use a courier (at our cost).
SmarterScience's correspondence address is:
Flat 1, 6 Nightingale Road
Southsea PO5 3FD
United Kingdom
Company number
SmarterScience is a sole trader and is therefore not registered with Companies House.
The UK does not have the Netherlands' equivalent of the Dutch KvK.
Logo
The logo is a nine-banded armadillo, which is quite common in the southern United States. This animal is just
as unique and resourceful as SmarterScience and its owner. A remarkable survivor. Did you know
that when things are rough and other species withdraw, the nine-banded armadillo - as a species -
tends to expand its territory? And that nine-banded armadillos almost always have identical quadruplets?
Partners
Below are some of SmarterScience's business partners.
Diny van den Bout Coaching & Training:
Diny van den Bout is Dutch, but has worked among English-speaking colleagues for years. Diny coaches business owners
and people who want to start a new business.
She also offers a variety of other services, including presentation skills
training and persuasion training (which is what
her presentation skills training is based on as well).
Diny and I met in cyberspace
(Women on the Web, formerly Webgrrls Nederland) and
we clicked quickly. Later, it turned out that we have many
things in common, such as quite a bit of personal history and the fact that we both come from families
with generations of own businesses.
ElkeTekst:
ir. Elke Bussler - agriculture specialist (graduate of Wageningen University)
and certified translator German and Spanish
Elke and I also met in cyberspace, a few years ago. We have somewhat similar professional backgrounds and
got along well. Elke provided pages in German and Spanish for this web site.
ICTB:
Pinkney C. Froneberger III - communication skills specialist with a degree in
Communications and Political Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
Pinkney and I ran into each other at a workshop organized by Berenschot in 2004 and then discovered we were both members of the
Amsterdam American Business Club. Pinkney is a great guy, with a good sense of humor, and is tremendously
dedicated and motivated.
In the summer of 2004, NATO contacted SmarterScience and asked if we could provide
presentation skills seminars. "We want our people to show more enthusiasm."
I called ICTB and introduced the two parties. That led to a series of on-site workshops.
Hoeflaken Geoconsultants:
drs. Frans van Hoeflaken - sedimentologist and stratigrapher with extensive experience in exploratory and
preparatory fieldwork, particularly in Asia.
I met Frans during a geological fieldwork in Spain in the summer of 1986 and we've stayed in touch since.
He is dedicated, skilled, resourceful and wonderful to work with. Nothing wrong with his sense of humor
either, by the way. Frans is based in Amsterdam. I contact Frans for instance when a geologist from an oil
country in the Middle East wants to talk about fieldwork.
Krivaja Translations:
dr. ir. Marianne Kerkhof - mathematician and technical physicist with teaching experience in
computer science and who specializes in translations in these fields
Marianne and I have been members of a
NIMF, a large Dutch network for women in science
for many years. We have cooperated numerous times and refer to each other's businesses whenever appropriate.
Marianne is the person you need to talk to if for example
you need a translation of a mathematics book or a bulky SAP manual from English into Dutch.
Teatske de Jong of de2dames:
Teatske and I met online at
Women on the Web (formerly Webgrrls Nederland)
in the late 1990s and then in real life at a Women on the Web workshop for female business owners. I
remember how she had to keep repeating the correct pronunciation of her first name - because people kept asking -
and I liked her to-the-point and hence practical no-nonsense approach.
Among other things, Teatske teaches biomedicine students at the Radboud University
Nijmegen how to design an attractive and effective poster in PowerPoint. Core business of de2dames is
setting up exhibitions for museums and institutions.
