Did you know that the friendship between the United States and The Netherlands constitutes the United States’ longest and unbroken peaceful relationship with any foreign country?

friends in America Diplomatic relations between the two countries started on April 19 of the year 1782. On that day, The Netherlands acknowledged John Adams as Minister of the United States of America. It was the second country to recognize the U.S.A. as an independent nation.

On April 12 of the year 1982, Ronald Reagan declared April 19, 1982 - the 200th anniversary of diplomatic relations - as Dutch-American Friendship Day (Proclamation 4928). The Amsterdam American Business Club first celebrated Dutch-American Friendship Day on April 16, 2003.

Dutch-American Heritage Day is on November 16. Initiated by the official proclamation of President Bush, who declared November 16, 1991 as Dutch-American Heritage Day.

friends in AmericaDutch citizens who emigrate to the United States may be “warned” that friendships with the ever busy Americans will only be fleeting. Expect to discover the opposite! Dutch-American friendship is part of a long tradition and your American friends are likely to become your closest and most loyal friends.

Similarly strong are the commercial ties between The Netherlands and the U.S. In 2003, the Netherlands was the second-largest investor in the U.S. Many Dutch companies are active in the U.S. and American companies have branches in The Netherlands. And centuries ago, it was Dutch banks that lent the money with which Americans built their new country.

The Amsterdam American Business Club celebrates Dutch-American Friendship Day annually.
